Travis – Guitar

Dan – Guitar

Lest We Forget: Your last album was released in 2009 and there was a band break up between 2011 and 2014. Have you seen each other during this band-break?

Dan: A little bit here and there. For us, it was something like finding ourselfs outside of the band. We grew up in the band. Since we came on the high school we started touring, so we never really got to know ourselfs outside of being the guys of Atreyu. So in that time, we saw each other a little bit here and there.

Travis: We had to learn how to not be in Atreyu.

Lest We Forget: And have you learned something in that time, maybe about the other band members?

Travis: I get bored easily, I learnd that.

Dan: I learnd a lot about business in particular I had a clothing line that started before we stopped, and I started a merchandise company as well, close to the time we stopped. When we stopped, it gave me the time to really tie into that and perfect the business and learn more about that. Now, I do the merchandising for Atreyu and some bands.

Lest We Forget: What is the name of the brand?

Dan: It’s called Rock World Merchandise and another one called Craft Beer Merchandise (Craft Brew Merchandise) where we do some merchandise for beer.

Lest We Forget: Between your last album release and your break up there were two years. What have you done in this time, only touring?

Travis: Yeah pretty much that the whole time. After the album was released we were touring pretty much. I think that was a big reason we took a break for a while because we were constantly travelling and that last leg of touring. We were touring in europe and then flew directly to australia. We were all sick and just burned out.

Dan: We started to forget were home is. It’s not always fun and having a great time. Sometimes the shows dont went very well or people get sick or you just start missing your family.

In that time off we learned who we are as people as well as what works for us and what doesn’t. Because of that we know how much of touring we should do or not do.

Lest We Forget: Do you think the bands sound changed during and because of the break?

Dan: Yeah. I mean, in general our sound always changes. We’re trying to evolve, we felt like that is what we need to do.

Everytime we’ve done a record we worked with a different producer which has taught us something. They’re all trying to teach you the same thing in their own ways, so that helped us a lot. Like learning how to write songs better, produce songs better and stuff.

We’re more educated on who we are and what we want to sound like, what works best for each individual bandmember.

Travis: We would never be a band who writes the same records over and over again because it gets boring for uns and probably for the listener. Some bands can do that, like AC/DC. If you buy an AC/DC record, you know what you gonna get and you wanted that. It’s like pizza. You know what pizza is, you know what you’re getting and you’re loving that. But we’re not that band. We’re always gonna constantly evolve wether we’re constantly doing it or not.

Lest We Forget: You’re already released three songs of your new album. Have you choosen exactly this songs to be released or did the management told you so?

Dan: A little bit of both. We work with them because we want to make sure they are doing what we want to do but at the same time, their job is to help us see beyond the influences and see the things from an outside perspective, like „This would probably a great first song because it brings this and it does that..“

Travis: At the end of the day, we kind of put the green light on what goes on but as a band you have to have that outside look.

Lest We Forget: Your support band today is To The Rats And Wolves. Do you know them or do you ever watch the shows of your support bands?

Travis: This is our first show with them, so no. But we’re defenitly interested in them and their music.

Dan: Yeah, they’re a german band. Our promoter came up with this band, so we were like okay, sounds good, whoever this is. Tonight we’re checking them out, see what they’re doing.

Lest We Forget: Your show is in the german city Essen. Have you chosen this city? If bands normaly play a few german concerts, they play in cologne, munich or hamburg, not essen.

Travis: This is our first time here. We’ve played pretty much in every major german city.

Dan: Our booking angent puts the things for us together and we can choose which shows we want to do but generally we’re the same opinion.

Lest We Forget: What was the craziest thing that happend to you on tour?

Travis: I got relly really drunk in canada. I had a blackout moment when I just don’t remeber anything. I was at a houseparty. I didn’t know anybody. I don’t know how I got there. It was in canada in the middle of the winter, so it was extremly cold. I didn’t had my jacked, my phone, or my wallet on me,- so I didn’t even had any identidfication. As I come to, this girl comes up to me, jelling at me. She says to somebody else to lock the door behind me so that I couldn’t leave. I just didn’t know what was going on. Then this guy cames onto me and whispers: dude, get out of here while you still can. So I walked downstairs onto the street thinking there might be a cab or something. There wasn’t anybody on the street and I didn’t even knew where I was. So I was walking and maybe 20 minutes later I saw headlights in the distance and it was a cab. I freaked out for him to see me. When I get in the cab and he asked me where I want to go I jus didn’t knew. So he was just basically driving down in the town and somehow passed our tourbus. And until this day, I still don’t know much about this night.

Lest We Forget: You wrote a soundtrack for the film „Mr. And Ms. Smith“. Have you ever watched this film?

Dan: It was the Bon Jovi Cover? No, I’v never watched it.

Lest We Forget: You never wanted to hear your music in a film?

Dan: Sure:ur song’s on it, tight! Next..

Lest We Forget: If you had the chance to write a song for any film/series/movie, for whch would you like to write for?

Dan: Game Of Thrones! The whole next seaseon.

Travis: I’d say Game Of Thrones. I don’t watch he show that much but I know that the music is a big part of it. I’d say Game Of Thrones or Star Wars. But I wouldn’t do anything that’s already there so I wouldn’t touch any of the Star Wars songs.

Lest We Forget: Have you ever covered a song besides Bon Jovi?

Dan: Yeah, we did a few. We did Clean Sheets by Descendents. We did Epic by Faith No More. We did a collaboration at our last tour where all the bands of the tour came together and cover songs together. It was like the guitar player of his band, the singer of that band and the drummer of this band are gonna do this song. We did a Volbeat song, Aerosmith, Deftones, Dead Kennedys

Lest We Forget: What do you like the most about cover songs?

Dan: I think cover songs for bands are very awsome, especially in a festival szenario or playing somewhere where some people might never heard of your band before because if you play a very popular cover that people know, even if they never heard of your band, they will know that song and so they can participate in the show and feel like they’re a part of the show, maybe just singing along with this song.

Travis: A lot of songs we’ve covered are songs we’ve grew up with. So when we were younger  we were rocking them in our bedroom. And now, ten or fivteen years later, playing this as a real band, that’s very cool!

My favourite band

Travis: Scoripons.

Dan: Right! For you, Deftones.

My favourite colour

Travis: I’d say green.

Dan: Yeah green.. And for you, blue?

Travis: Yeah, I like blue.

The first concert I’ve been to

Dan: Mh, maybe Metallica?

Travis: That wasn’t my first but definitely one of my first. I think my first was Aerosmith.

Dan: Ah, mine was GreenDay.

My biggest hero in the childhood

Travis: Oh, I’d say Billie Joe Armstrong.

Dan: Right, and yours was Luke Skywalker.

Which band you’ve been on tour is do you like the most

Dan: Maybe Every Time I Die.

Travis: Yeah, Every Time I Die is mine. I’d say Every Time I Die for you too, just because of the fun. They’re fun guys to be around.

What should your ideal women look like?

Travis: Dan likes tall women. And he prefers blond. Tall and blond.

Dan: Travis likes some big.. Real big!
